UPDATE: youth camp 2020
Modified format to comply with CDC Guidelines
Status update of June 1, 2020
Status update of June 1, 2020
Good Neighbors has revised the format for the 2020 Youth Camp based on the known factors at this time:
These paragraphs summarize the key decisions made to allow us to hold the camp this July. More details will be provided as the new systems are put into place.
A. Actions being taken to meet CDC guidelines
Of primary importance is for Good Neighbors to make the appropriate preparations to hold camp safely in a way that minimizes potential for any spread of the virus. A very useful one page summary of the actions we will take is outlined in the file CDC Camp Decision Tree , available at this webpage:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/Camps-Decision-Tree.pdf
We are implementing steps to be able to answer all questions affirmatively. Some steps will require help for all participants before camp as well as during camp. Some of that help is described below; more information on that will come later.
B. Format of this year's camp
The following points highlight how the camp will operate this year:
C. Revised fee for this year's camp
The revised format reduces some costs of the camp but preparations to comply with CDC guidelines will increase other costs. But overall costs are expected to be lower.
- the planned move of Chester County from "Red" to "Yellow" on June 5,
- refined guidelines from CDC,
- actions planned for other summer camp organizations, and
- feedback from the groups that had reserved spots for this year's camp.

B. Format of this year's camp
The following points highlight how the camp will operate this year:
- It is not feasible for us to stay overnight at the Avondale Presbyterian Church
- The camp will be operated as a day camp with teams matched with a specific home and will meet at that home each day.
- We will use the "Cohort" concept to minimize potential spread of the virus and to facilitate contact tracing. the combined teams will not be meeting together at Avondale Presbyterian Church.
- Teams will meet at their worksite in the morning, eat lunch at the worksite, have what is normally the evening program at their site at some point during the day, and go home in the late afternoon.
- This year's program leader, Mike Yurik, who led the evening program two years ago, will travel from site to site to lead the program at each site.
- To avoid transportation of many people per car, parents/guardians will be asked to drop off their camper(s) at a set time each morning and pick them up at a set time in the late afternoon.
- Each camper will be asked to bring their sack lunch from home.
C. Revised fee for this year's camp
The revised format reduces some costs of the camp but preparations to comply with CDC guidelines will increase other costs. But overall costs are expected to be lower.
- Because of the format change, the fee is $125.
- Qualification for refunds:
- Some participants have already paid more than $125 and therefore qualify for a refund.
- While the deposits were identified as non-refundable, we will refund deposits for those who cancel due to concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Refund options: Good Neighbors has many needy homeowners awaiting repairs to their home in addition to the homes being repaired during camp. We therefore respectfully ask that individuals consider these options-
- Allow the amount of the refund to become a donation to Good Neighbors
- Designate the amount of the refund to be a deposit towards the 2021 Good Neighbors camp
- Or, receive a check for the qualified refund.
