New Windows in Oxford

December 13, 2009 --The Daily Local -- James Yetman, a 29-year-old union bricklayer, knew exactly what was wrong with the windows in his seven-bedroom, early 19th century townhome.

Yetman's heating bills were burdensome — he has seven children, with an eighth on the way. His wife, Regina, 36, stays home to raise the children, and his earnings as a bricklayer did not allow him the income needed to replace the windows.

Yetman wasn't sure what — if anything — he could do to remedy the draftiness. But then a man at his church, the Vineyard Christ Fellowship, told him of the Share the Warmth program. Read the rest of the story...

Interview with Jay Malthaner, Executive Director

December 9, 2009 -- The Daily Local -- Jay Malthaner said that among the material benefits of the Share the Warmth program and his agency's work, he notices that the more people talk about it, the more people come from out of the shadows to ask for help. Many homeowners are initially reluctant to seek out the donated materials and work, for fear of exposing their needs.

"But the more we notify people that we exist, the more calls we get," he said.

That is a double-edged sword, however. The more calls the agency gets means that the poverty level in the county is steady and rising. But the calls energize the volunteers to get out and help, and the more work they do the more challenges they are able to meet. Read the full interview...
